I'll be speaking at the 29th International Japanese-English Translation(IJET-29) Conference at the end of June. It is six years since I have spoken at an IJET. At IJET-23 in 2012 I talked about incorporating along with three other translators. In 2014 I chaired the IJET-25 organizing committee. At IJET-27 in 2016 I spoke with another translator about legal translation at the JATLAW pre-event. So this will be the first time I am speaking on my own at an IJET and I am very excited to have the opportunity to share some of my tips on productivity. My session is only 60 minutes and I have already prepared 30 slides... One of my tips involves using wildcards in MS Word and my husband will be giving a presentation on that very topic at the same time in another room. This year's IJET is in Osaka, a city I lived in for four years. As well as hanging out with other translators, I am looking forward to getting my fix of nikuman from 551 Horai!!

法務に関わっている皆さんはすでにご存知のことだと思いますが、5月25日にEUでGDPR(General Data Protection Regulation:EU一般データ保護規則)が施行されました。 やったね(笑) I'm sure that by now everyone in the legal community is getting pretty fed up with hearing about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the EU's new rules on data protection. I am also sure that many in the wider business community are finding complying with the new regulation to be a bit stressful. I wonder how many people breathed a sigh of relief when their company had put all necessary measures in place and the regulation finally came into effect! Which leads me to wonder whether there is any other rule or law that has such a wide reaching impact on companies throughout the world. It is not just multinational companies but small companies and sole proprietors, even companies that were planning on operating solely in their home country and not expecting to do business with EU residents, that are affected by the new regulation. After all, all businesses that sell to EU residents and collect personal data are obliged to comply with the GDPR. Record numbers of foreigners are visiting Japan, many tourists are seeking experiences off the beaten track which takes them to remote parts of the country. So that small hotel EU residents book in the middle of the countryside is now obliged to comply with the GDPR as a result of their patronage. Since April 2005 hotels in Japan have been obliged to photocopy the passports' of overseas visitors, which naturally includes visitors from the EU, thus compelling them to revisit the way in which they process personal data. No doubt there are some businesses that are unintentionally violating the new regulation. Orian has been involved in various translation projects relating to the GDPR. I have read the original English text of the regulation many times and I welcome any future GDPR-related projects that let me use the knowledge I have built up thus far!! Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information is expected to be revised following the introduction of the GDPR. This will no doubt result in a trickle down of work for translators like me...hooray!!!! |
